A truck driver from Texas has been sentenced to federal prison after being caught transporting over 24 individuals in a tanker trailer. Richard Rindeikis, 44, from San Antonio, received a 10-year prison sentence for conspiracy to transport illegal aliens on July 1, 2025, as stated by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Texas. He entered a guilty plea for this charge on February 5, 2025. Authorities reported that on November 18, 2024, Rindeikis was driving a truck with a tanker trailer when he was stopped at a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint near Carrizo Springs. During the inspection, he falsely stated that the tanker was empty and was directed to a secondary inspection after he failed to produce his driver’s license. USBP agents noticed that the lids on the tanker trailer were closed and fully locked. Upon opening the hatches, officials found many individuals confined within the tanker, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Twenty-five individuals hailing from Ecuador, Colombia, El Salvador, Honduras, and Mexico were taken out of the tanker, leading to the arrest of Rindeikis. “This area has witnessed an alarming number of human smuggling cases like this, often resulting in tragic outcomes.” “Without the outstanding efforts of the U.S. Border Patrol in this situation, we could have witnessed another incident,” stated U.S. Attorney Justin R. Simmons for the Western District of Texas. “My office will keep working to investigate, charge, and penalize those who prioritize profit over the well-being of individuals.” “This sentencing serves as a stark reminder of the lengths that smugglers will go to for financial gain, putting the lives of at-risk individuals at risk,” stated Craig Larrabee, Special Agent in Charge of ICE Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) San Antonio. Transporting people illegally in a tanker trailer is both against the law and morally wrong. Due to the rapid response of the police, the victims were saved in time, preventing a disaster.
