Arizona authorities issued an alert after a wrong-way driver told troopers he was playing a new game on a busy interstate near Winslow.
On September 20, 2026, several 911 callers reported a passenger vehicle driving west on eastbound I-40 near the AZ-99 interchange in the Winslow, Arizona area.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS), the vehicle continued driving the wrong way on I-40, “creating a significant hazard for motorists.”
AZDPS Highway Patrol troopers were able to locate or stop the vehicle before a crash occurred.
“The driver of the SUV told Troopers he was participating in a game called “Lunatic” with two other unidentified individuals, in which participants intentionally drive the wrong way on highways or interstates. He claimed he was acting as the “supervisor” of the game because he was older than the others,” AZDPS said.
Troopers placed the SUV driver under arrest for endangerment and reckless driving.
“No amount of “fun” is worth risking your life or others’. Wrong-way driving can be deadly, and we’re glad Troopers were able to cut their game short. Thank you to the citizens who called 911 to report this dangerous driving! Be smart and don’t fall for trends that put your safety at risk,” AZDPS said.
