The California Highway Patrol (CHP) took enforcement action after finding a major equipment violation during a commercial vehicle inspection on a truck traveling through Banning.
A loaded tractor trailer was recently stopped at CHP’s Desert Hills Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Facility.
During an inspection, an officer spotted that one of the two fifth wheel pivot bracket pins was missing.
“The pivot pins retain the fifth wheel head on the tractor, ultimately connecting the trailer to the tractor. With one pin missing, the fifth wheel assembly is no longer properly secured, creating the potential for a catastrophic failure resulting in trailer separation,” CHP said.
The tractor trailer was ordered out-of-service due to the severity of the defect until proper repairs were completed.
“This is a reminder why thorough pre-trip inspections matter. Many of the most dangerous defects aren’t obvious until someone takes the time to look closely,” CHP said.
