Indiana Governor Mike Braun held a ceremonial signing for a bill that revoked almost 1,800 non-domiciled commercial drivers licenses in the state at the beginning of April.

The Indiana House Enrolled Act went into effect on April 1st. The bill, also known as HEA 1200, revoked the CDLs of any immigrant residing in the country illegally – approximately 1,790 CDLs. The HEA 1200 also requires drivers to demonstrate English Language Proficiency in order to obtain a CDL, makes presenting false records to obtain, or lacking proper documentation while holding a CDL, a felony, and fines companies up to $50,000 if they are found hiring undocumented immigrants as truck drivers.

On Monday, April 20th, Governor Braun held a ceremonial signing for the bill, praising its impact in the state so far, reported 13WTHR.

“Illegal aliens must never receive a CDL,” Braun said. “Indiana is taking decisive action to make sure this never happens.”

“It [the bill] creates new penalties to crack down on non-licensed drivers and the companies that employ them,” he continued.

The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles has paused issuing any non-domiciled CDLs until staff is trained on the new standards and requirements.

The number of non-domiciled CDL holders in the state is now believed to be less than 10.
