The state of Michigan will provide a $1 million grant to facilitate the conversion of a defunct mom & pop truck stop into a used car lot.
The former Halfway Truck Stop at 1223 West Saginaw Road in Vassar, Michigan has been vacant since 2022. Since the closure of the mom & pop truck stop, environmental assessments revealed metals and petroleum compounds in the soil on the 1.9 acre site.
According to ABC 12, the $1 million grant provided by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy will fund additional site investigation, excavation and disposal of soil, removal of the three underground storage tanks, asbestos abatement, and a vapor mitigation system.
Cook Chevrolet Dealership, adjacent to the former semi truck stop, plans on investing $4 million into the site to turn it into a used car lot, sales building, and an expanded service center. The conversion of the mom& pop truck stop is expected to be completed by the summer of 2028.
