The average cost of diesel and gasoline is nearing record highs reached in 2022, creating a tough landscape for drivers.
As of April 10th, the average cost of diesel across the nation reached $5.68 – up from $4.78 a week ago and $3.62 a year ago.
Costs are highest in California, with the most recent, official info in an April 6th update showing an average cost of $7.57 for one gallon of diesel and $5.77 for gasoline. Record highs for gasoline and diesel fuel were set in June 2022. At that time, the average cost of diesel climbed to $5.82, and $5.02 for gasoline.
“Maybe the independent owner operators, because it’s their truck and they pay the bills,” said Larry Baarts, a trucking company owner out of Minnesota. “They might call it; they might shut it down or quit for a while if things got out of hand on pricing and stuff.”
“A lot of these companies don’t realize that what they were paying before was great, but now with these fuel prices, we have to ask them for more because we have to meet our basic needs as a family,” said Kristen Riddle, a trucking company owner in North Carolina.
The Spokesman Review reported diesel climbing close to $7.75 a gallon in California, earlier this week.
“California sets itself apart from the rest of the country when it comes to pricing,” said Greg Dubuque, general manager of Liberty Linehaul West. “Now it’s really out of control.”
