Two women are hospitalized after a wreck caused a load of bricks to rain down on their car following a crash involving a semi truck and another car.
The accident happened just before 8 a.m. on Monday, August 25th on Highway 290 in Houston, Texas.
According to KHOU11, a Camry was traveling west on 290 when it crashed into the flatbed semi truck hauling bricks. The crash caused the truck driver to lose control and spin around, sending its trailer over the concrete barrier and into the HOV lane. A car traveling in the HOv lane then crashed into the flatbed, causing the heavy load of bricks to rain down on their vehicle. A total of nine vehicles were involved in the crash and resulting chain reaction.
The two women inside of the second car had to be cut out of the vehicle. One was transported to a hospital via Life Flight with a brain bleed and fractured spine, while the other was taken to a hospital via ambulance with a broken leg and fractured spine.
“The driver hit the steer axle of the truck, which caused it to lose control and strike the barrier wall. The trailer then spun around and got on top of the wall, and a car traveling eastbound in the HOV lanes struck the trailer, which caused it to lose its load,” said Harris County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Michael Gardenhi.
It is unclear why the Camry crashed into the semi truck, and possible charges against that motorist have not been released.
Attorneys for the two women in their mid 30s, Courtney Silverberg and Natalie Jones, say that the women spent hours in surgery and have a long road to recovery.
“I don’t really want to go into too much detail about their private situation. They have extensive injuries. Both of them do,” said Attorney Sherra Gilbert. “These are catastrophic injuries, and they’re going to be suffering for a long time.”
“We’re just getting the preliminary information and we will get the experts that we need to get on the case as quickly as possible, so that we can get some answers for our clients,” said Attorney Kim Spurlock.
“In no way, shape, or form did they cause or contribute to this event,” Gilbert added.
